Thank you so much for checking in with our weekly blog as we enjoy sharing about the activities we have been doing.
This week our students began our soccer unit. The unit began by having the students learn/review the basics of passing while playing games involving skill based practice. Because we have students of all ability levels we work to adapt the game for our more experienced players so they may also find the practice meaningful and beneficial to the continued development of their abilities.
On Wednesday our 6th and 7th graders ran their first 4 Minute Pursuit of the year. We were pleasantly surprised by the numbers all of the students achieved as they were well above the first 4 Minute Pursuit scores from last year at this time. The energy and excitement the students displayed as they tried to better the scores put up by earlier classes was fun to see and added to the friendly competition that develops between the various classes. Our 5th graders will participate in the next 4 Minute Pursuit as they spent Wednesday's PE class learning about our Fitness Journals.
On Thursday and Friday, our PE team faced a couple of challenges which led to us altering our plans from continuing our soccer unit outside to playing a different game inside. Unfortunately, I had to leave part way through the day on Thursday to attend the funeral of a dear friend and Mr. Skinner, who had knee surgery a week prior was still out recovering. So, for the first time in 14 years of teaching PE here at Drum, both PE teachers were absent on the same day. We scheduled an activity that would be enjoyable for the students and that would set our student teacher, Mr. Burd, up for success during our absence. Thank you to Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Drost (both former Drum teachers) for coming in to help Mr. Burd during our absence on Thursday. The two of them are phenomenal assets to us and the rest of the teaching staff. The students all played our 'Team Sliders' game from last week and really enjoyed the opportunity to play again as they now began to incorporate strategy and tactics into the game. All in all, it was another great week here in the gym and we look forward to more outstanding experiences in the week ahead.
Please remind your children to turn in their PE Contracts, if they haven't already done so, to earn credit in the grade book. All students were also provided with a Fitness Journal to take home and begin completing. Fitness Journals are the only way a student can make-up for any absence from PE. If you have questions about Fitness Journals, please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions page, here.
Thanks again for visiting our blog and remember to check back in again next week for more exciting news from the Drum Gymnasium.
Sincerely,
The 3 PE Guys
